So I inherited a team, need to pick 7. Start QB, RB (2), WR (2), Flex, TE, K, DST.
M Shaub J Freeman C Benson B Jacobs C Spiller J Addai M Floyd J Avant R Wayne C Johnson A Johnson A Gates V Shiancoe D Bailey Jets
12 Team 0.5 PPR QB: Matt Ryan, Robert Griffin III RB: Ray Rice, Jamaal Charles, Kevin Smith WR: A. J. Green, Jeremy Maclin, Torrey Smith, Denarius Moore TE: Jason Witten, Coby Fleener K: Garrett Hartley DST: Buffalo Bills
CJ - no brainer AJ - still a stud but aging plus injury prone Wayne - see what happens with his contract + qb situation in indy Spiller - huge upside, see what happens in buff with FJax Schaub - solid qb Benson - you need a rb and well this is your best option Gates - still a top TE, guy could catch TDs in a wheelchair
Watch what happens in Indy and Buff with contracts and ppl moving.
I drink because of the 1998 NFC championship game.
12 team big $$$ non PPR league - QB RB RB WR WR TE D K
QB: Rivers RB: Murray, Matthews, R.Bush, D. Brown WR: Julio Jones, Colston, VJax, Garcon TE: Witten, Gresham K: Kaeding DST: SEA

I would keep Schuab, Gates, C Johnson, A Johnson and CJ Spiller. The next two option come down between Benson, Jacobs and Wayne. I do not think Benson stays in CIN so I would keep Wayne and Jacobs.
really guys Gates? He's done..... If you don't have Gronk, or Graham....not sue i could support keeping a TE.....all the rest have issues and not much difference between #4 and #12........
Just saying no way i keep a TE.....take a flier on one of the other guys.....

How quickly we forget how dominant Gates was as lately as 2010. And in 2011, despite battling injuries and subpar QB (subpar for Rivers, anyways) he finished as TE7 in both PPR and non-PPR settings... and in only 13 games. Extrapolate his production for 16 games and he finishes in the top-3.
Yes he's getting older, and the foot issues may continue to linger. But he's the one guy that I would place my $$ on to finish as TE1 outside of Gronk and Graham. His upside is much higher than the Benson keeper the you offered the OP. It's likely higher than Floyd's and Jacob's, as well. And in a keep-7 scenario, I want UPSIDE from my last few keepers.
Like Indi said he only played 13 games, and of those games he was not 100% ever. Give him this whole offseason to heal up and PRAY Rivers has a decent season he will easily be back to top 3-5 TE. He is also Rivers favorite target in the redzone. Plus with VJax future in SD uncertain, in a 7 keeper league he is a great keeper.
