It’s been written or spoken ad nauseam about the Buffalo Bills heading into the 2012 season.

The team needs to find a new No. 2 receiver.

Not surprisingly, that hasn’t sat well with the player who was trusted in that role at the start of last year.

“You start to see things like, ‘They need to draft a receiver.’ You see all of those things,” said third-year pro Donald Jones. “As a man, as a competitor, I’m out to prove everybody wrong.

“It definitely fuels me.”

Coach Chan Gailey has stressed throughout spring practices that his depth chart at this stage of the game is made up of magnets, easily slid up or down. But Gailey did let out this nugget last week when discussing the race for the No. 2 job opposite Stevie Johnson.

Coach Chan Gailey said Donald Jones still has the edge on the No. 2 wideout battle.
Jones is fighting off rookie T.J. Graham and Derek Hagan for the "Z" receiver gig. Once healthy, David Nelson (leg) will man the slot. Regardless, we can't expect consistent target numbers here as the Bills routinely run four- and five-wide sets. Jones started seven times last year, but averaged a mere 3.2 catches for 33.0 yards and totaled one touchdown in those games.

Jones value just increased:

Bills WR David Nelson has suffered a torn ACL, and is done for the season.
It's devastating news for a Bills' passing attack that had an awful afternoon in Sunday's blowout loss to the Jets. Buffalo will now likely turn to Donald Jones in the slot, and line up third-round rookie T.J. Graham on the outside opposite Stevie Johnson. The Bills will be in even bigger trouble if Johnson's groin woes linger like they did in 2011. The news obviously clouds Nelson's future after he posted a 61/658/5 line in his second season as an undrafted free agent out of Florida in 2011, but he won't turn 26 until November. He should bounce back. Suffering his injury in Week 1 also puts Nelson in position to be ready for camp next summer.
