balance team is like trying to win a league without Round 1 and Round 2, it's possible but difficult.
normally i'll at least get 2 top-tier player just like how people normally get from snake. (first 2 round)
people know how important their 1st round and 2nd round pick in snake draft, that applies to auction draft too.
I agree with CS that the studs and scrubs approach is better in auction styles. We will reach a point, pretty quickly, that players start going dirt cheap. There will also be some inflated bids as guys with money fight over the last scrap at a position. I do a roto style basketball auction and balance is MUCH more important in that format, not so much in the h2h world of football.
In theory, I would agree with both of you. But with the outrageous prices that the top tier players fetched, it's tougher for the studs and duds philosophy to win.
My goal (and hopefully everyone else's) is to put the maximum number of points in my lineup every week. And when most of the league is paying 30%+ premiums on elite players, sometimes the smart move is to hold off and build a starting lineup of typical 2nd-5th round picks. There's more than a few teams that have a few great players but not much else in their starting lineup, and their bench is non-existent. Yes, there will be some fantastic values that will happen as we finish up, but you're playing a dangerous game of chicken as the talent dwindles. Just my 2 cents.
