Blaine Gabbert - Update: 2013

Postby stomperrob » Sun Aug 05, 2012 1:01 pm

Still early but he's not looking great so far:

After visiting Jaguars camp, ESPN's Paul Kuharsky remains skeptical that Blaine Gabbert will improve in his second season.
Kuharsky says Gabbert has had some "very nice" moments in his red, no-contact practice jersey, but things still fall apart for him all too often. "A kneel-down would seem less disheartening in many of those instances," Kuharsky quipped. Kuharsky believes there are still major consistency issues, and ultimately it all comes down to how Gabbert responds to a live pass rush. We'd like to see Gabbert come along at least a bit so Laurent Robinson and Justin Blackmon could be fantasy contributors. It would also help Rashad Jennings. Source: ESPN.com Aug 5 - 11:08 AM

sometimes the inaccuracy issues with Blaine sound eerily similiar with those shown by ex-Leo Andre Ware. That has to scare the heck out of a franchise. Just when do you admit mistakes and bail?

He seems to be a kid who should have gone to a good team and sat on the bench for a couple years and learned from a pro.

A lot of these high pick rookies would benefit from that.

I often wonder if there are not "old-school" QBs who have to have time to absorb the playbook, responsibility of being a pro-QB, before they are fully able to make the adjustments needed to mold their skills to the game. Ware is an extreme, hyperbole on my part. But you wonder if Gabbert wouldn't benefit greatly from that time to get comfortable in his NFL skin. Too quick to get Garrard out of the way instead of using him as a bridge while Blained gets his groove back.

The Florida Times-Union confirms Blaine Gabbert has outplayed Chad Henne in training camp.
Reports on Gabbert's progress have been mixed at best, which speaks to the level of disappointment in Henne's play. There's not a single member of the Jaguars passing "attack" worth drafting in standard 12-team fantasy leagues. Related: Blaine Gabbert

Just so we understand, this is an NFL team? Henne may start off behind, but woe be the franchise if he doesn't end up taking a back seat in this race. Were I prone to musing out loud I would wonder of the possibility of Jax moving to London or somewhere over there in a few years. They just don't seem to be working in Jacksonville.

Gabbert to run more???

Coach Mike Mularkey is encouraging Blaine Gabbert to run more.
The athletic Gabbert ran a 4.61 at the Combine, impressive speed for a 6'5/233 quarterback. But last season, he rushed just 48 times for 98 yards. It's a surprisingly low number for a player that looked so uncomfortable in the pocket.

Blaine Gabbert has torn labrum
Updated: October 23, 2012, 10:45 AM ET
ESPN.com news services

The preliminary results of the MRI performed on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert indicate he suffered a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Ed Werder.

A determination about his availability for Sunday's game in Green Bay won't be made until after famed specialist Dr. James Andrews offers a second opinion later Tuesday.

The Jaguars already will be without starting running back Maurice Jones-Drew against the Packers after he injured his foot on Sunday against the Raiders. Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey updated Jones-Drew's status Monday, acknowledging that the three-time Pro Bowler could miss extended time.

Gabbert completed 8 of 12 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game in the second quarter in the loss at Oakland. The Jaguars were mostly inept after Gabbert left the game.

Backup Chad Henne completed 9 of 20 passes for 71 yards and was sacked three times.

Jaguars' new QB coach sees promise in Blaine Gabbert
Posted: February 12, 2013 - 8:43pm
By Vito Stellino

Frank Scelfo, the new quarterback coach of the Jaguars, has one of the toughest jobs in pro football this year.

Scelfo’s assignment is to develop Blaine Gabbert into a NFL-caliber quarterback after he struggled in his first two years with the Jaguars.

Scelfo, though, doesn’t see the same Gabbert the fans have watched the last two years.

“I look at it differently than you guys,’’ he said. “You all have an opinion formed after two years of watching [him]. I don’t have an opinion yet. I don’t have a vision of him that is skewed one way or the other.

“I like him as a person. I’ve had a chance to talk to him. He’s very interesting, he’s very outgoing, very comfortable to talk to as Chad [Henne] is. He wants to be successful. He has the motivation inside to be successful, which means he’s going to be a hard-working guy.’’

Scelfo sees a lot of upside, looking at how Gabbert might be viewed today if he’s stayed in school and red-shirted and was in this upcoming draft as a fifth-year senior.
