Greg Childs - torn patellar tendon

Postby stomperrob » Sun Aug 05, 2012 1:05 pm

Vikings.com has confirmed that rookie WR Greg Childs suffered a torn patellar tendon in both knees.
He's now torn his right patellar tendon twice (once in college), and the left patellar tendon once. Childs is done for the year and will have surgery on both knees in the next few days. Despite rigorous rehab, Browns CB Gary Baxter never made it back after suffering the same injury as Childs in October of 2006. Unless your league has an I.R. spot to burn, Childs should be dropped even in deep Dynasty leagues. Michael Jenkins and Stephen Burton figure to be the frontrunners to start opposite Percy Harvin while Jerome Simpson serves his three-game suspension. The Vikings could also turn to the trade market to acquire a field-stretching wideout. Source: Vikings.com Aug 5 - 11:03 AM

Rookie wide receiver Greg Childs is having surgery Monday, Aug. 6, to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in both knees after jumping for a pass in Saturday night's practice.

The Vikings, who waived Childs and will place him on injured reserve when he clears waivers, don't yet know what his long-term prognosis will be, coach Leslie Frazier said.

Though distraught, Childs had a clear message for Frazier shortly after the injury: "Coach, I'll be back."

"He really had a frame of mind where, because he's experienced adversity before, he really feels he's going to be able to bounce back from this," Frazier said. "He's going to work extremely hard and get back to playing again."

Childs' torn right patellar tendon in 2010 contributed to his slip to the fourth round of April's draft. The Vikings took a calculated risk on Childs, who was believed to have first-round talent two years ago. But the gamble now leaves them short-handed at a position in desperate need of downfield threats for the third consecutive year.

The outlook on dual patellar tendon tears on the same play is bleak. Former Bears wide recevier Wendell Davis (1993) and Browns cornerback Gary Baxter (2006) never played another regular-season game after such injuries.
