Witten suffers spleen injury Published: Aug. 15, 2012 at 01:29 p.m. | 1,358 Views | Tags: Jason Witten
03:01 – NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten suffered a spleen injury in Monday night's 3-0 victory over the Oakland Raiders and is expected to miss the rest of the preseason.
Rotowire says surgery is not needed - for now - and that he is with the team, and not home/hospital, for now. Anybody familiar with these injuries? If they say he doesn't need surgery right now, what are the odds it could change for the worse, and if it does, what is the timeframe for his return if he needs a splenectomy?

Witten out rest of preseason with lacerated spleen, could miss Cowboys' opener Posted Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012 By Clarence E. Hill Jr. chill@star-telegram.com
OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will miss the rest of the preseason with a lacerated spleen and could be sidelined for the Sept. 5 season opener at the New York Giants.
Witten suffered the injury on the second series of Monday's 3-0 preseason opening victory against the Oakland Raiders.
The spleen was not ruptured and does not require surgery at this time.
The plan right now is for him to remain idle for the next 10 days and then re-evaluate the situation.
"It's a very serious injury, and we're really taking this thing day by day," Cowboys coach Jason Garret said. "He has to be very still and idle for the next week to 10 days, so you won't see him out here on the practice field; he won't play in the game this week or next week. We've just got to make sure he heals as well as possible, as quickly as possible.
"As you can imagine, spleens are internal organs, and there're serious injuries involved with those things. Asking Wit to be still and idle is a hard thing; that's the biggest challenge right now."
I had an accepted trade in place for the 6.01 pick in a PPR league to get Witten. Didn't even bother with the 5.12 drafter because he has on his roster: Gronk, Cruz, Austin and Bowe to fill out his eligible lineup. So what does he do? Drafts a backup TE that will most likely offer no coverage of Bowe's early season catching up with his fifth round pick

Report: Jason Witten may miss opener with Giants By Jon Machota / Special Contributor jmachota@dallasnews.com 2:27 pm on August 22, 2012 | Permalink
As David Moore reported on Aug. 15, Jason Witten does not need to have surgery on his lacerated spleen. According to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter, the bleeding has subsided and doctors believe Witten’s spleen will heal on its own.
Schefter reported that had Witten needed surgery it would have ended his season.
Although Witten hopes to return for the team’s season opener Sept. 5 against the New York Giants, Schefter said it’s more likely that the seven-time Pro Bowl selection won’t play until Week 2 in Seattle on Sept. 16.
