This kid needs to get healthy and get a lot more reps if he's gonna compete for the #2 job:

It's been a tough start for Denver Broncos rookie Ronnie Hillman to show he's ready to be the team's No. 2 running back.

Hillman has flashed plenty of outside speed to go with elusiveness in traffic when's he run the ball, but he has injured his hamstring twice already in training camp.

That has allowed Lance Ball, in particular, and Xavier Omon to showcase their potential contributions.

Hillman suffered a right hamstring injury early in training camp then aggravated it in Tuesday morning's workout on an eye-popping run. He is expected to miss some practice time and may be held out of Saturday night's preseason game against Seattle.

The Broncos had held him out of last Thursday's preseason game against the Bears because of a sloppy field on a rainy night in Chicago, but had hoped he would be ready to go this weekend.

...as the Broncos have already shown the crowds of folks who have come out to watch training camp, they will use their running backs in a variety of ways this season, including those multiple back formations you're talking about.

They have shown that some of that variety will include lining up bigger players — tight ends, running backs and fullbacks — out wide in the formation.

They have done it with two tight ends and two backs, including fullback Chris Gronkowski at times. They haven't really flashed any sets with three running backs, but there are likely one or two of those formations in the playbook somewhere.

Overall, the Broncos have big plans for Hillman all over the formation. They like his speed, his lateral quickness and his potential to turn any play into a big play.

Hillman has suffered a hamstring injury in training camp that has slowed his transition into the offense. Once he's healthy, expect to see him get some work in the offense.

con't...
