The Steelers are optimistic they pre-empted a lingering issue with linebacker James Harrison’s achy knee and are hopeful they have the same luck with starting running back Isaac Redman’s groin.
Redman said his groin started to bother him at the start of camp, but he continued to practice in full pads — the past two days on a limited basis — before revealing he was injured.
“It hurts a little. It’s tough to run right now, so we’ll see,” Redman said. “It just gradually was sore. I thought it was a little tight, tried to get it stretched, but it just kept getting worse.”
Redman injured his hip during practice Wednesday and did not return. He fell to the ground during a drill and limped to the sidelines.
With Rashard Mendenhall likely out until the middle of the season, the Steelers can’t afford to be without Redman for an extended period: Backups Jonathan Dwyer, Baron Batch, Chris Rainey, Will Johnson and Jason Ford have a combined 25 carries.
