Last to tab coach, Arizona Cardinals bet on substance with Bruce Arians

The Cardinals did not pay for rhetoric. They did not invest in image.

They purchased a resume.

For the last name off the board, Bruce Arians is an excellent football coach.

For the last NFL team to fill a coaching vacancy, the Cardinals did just fine.

Arians is not a big name like Andy Reid or Chip Kelly. He has no currency with Cardinals fans, unlike Todd Haley and Ray Horton. He gives the franchise a rare, hairless combination at head coach and general manager, as if Mr. Clean should be the team’s new logo.

But Arians said a very impressive thing in his media debriefing on Thursday, something that exuded leadership and commanded attention.
