Willis McGahee - Update: released by Broncos

Willis McGahee's injury will force big decisions in Broncos run game
Posted: 11/20/2012 12:01:00 AM MST

With the discovery that Broncos running back Willis McGahee has a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee and could miss six to eight weeks, the Broncos are faced with a decision about their running game. That choice goes beyond whether they make any roster moves.

Will they sign any new RBs?

As far as bringing other running backs in, the Broncos simply don't need to — they already have three other running backs on the 53-man roster (Ronnie Hillman, Knowshon Moreno and Lance Ball) and have de-activated at least one running back on gameday for each of their 10 games so far.

Denver also already has a running back on their practice squad well versed in their system — Jeremiah Johnson.

The fact those other three running backs are on the roster and Johnson is on the practice squad is an indication the Broncos already have those four players ranked more highly than any running back that is still unsigned.

So, in short, there is no running back sitting at home right now that the Broncos have rated more highly than the four they have — otherwise, that back wouldn't be sitting at home right now.

It is possible the Broncos work out some running backs to update their personnel reports and to decide who they would sign if any additional backs get hurt.

Running back Willis McGahee also returned, practicing for the first time since suffering a compression fracture and a torn MCL in his right knee Nov. 18 against San Diego.

McGahee, who still is on injured reserve but has been designated for return, can only practice this week but would be eligible to play in the AFC championship game if the Broncos win Saturday. McGahee took part in Tuesday's practice on a limited basis, wearing a black jersey with no number.

Broncos position of need: Running back
By Mike Klis
The Denver Post

The question at the Broncos’ running back position is with their starter, Willis McGahee. He is 31 (turns 32 in October) and is coming off a compression fracture in his right tibia that forced him to miss the final seven games of the season, including the Broncos’ playoff loss to Baltimore.

Age, injury and a $2.5 million salary in 2013 make McGahee vulnerable. The Broncos will shop for a running back. And I believe they will look first for a veteran free agent with tread on his tires because pass protecting Peyton Manning is a high priority for a Broncos running back.

Knowshon Moreno is a solid 1B tailback who will make $1.7 million this year. He can pass protect, catch and run, but after back-to-back games of 119 and 115 rushing yards, Moreno appeared beat up in his final three games when he gained 78, 44 and 32 yards on just 3.3 yards per carry.

Second-year back Ronnie Hillman, who struggled with pass protection and assignments as a rookie, will return as the change-of-pace back at an affordable $515,000. Hillman rushed for 83 yards and had three receptions for another 20 yards in the playoff loss against Baltimore; an encouraging performance as he goes into his second season.

No big surprise here:

Broncos release Willis McGahee
Updated: June 13, 2013, 5:03 PM ET

The Denver Broncos released running back Willis McGahee, the team's starter the past two seasons, from their crowded backfield on Thursday.

"I knew it was going to happen. It is what it is. They are going younger," McGahee told ESPN's Josina Anderson.

Second-year pro Ronnie Hillman and rookie Montee Ball have been getting most of the work out of the backfield for the Broncos this offseason.

McGahee told ESPN he'll be rooting for the running backs that remain on Denver's roster to do well.

"I don't have anything against the people behind me. Now they have the opportunity. I wish them nothing but the best of luck. They're all good kids," he said.

Hours after releasing McGahee, the Broncos signed Ball, their second-round draft pick, along with cornerback Kayvon Webster, their third-round selection.
