Ryan Fitzpatrick - no longer the starter???

Postby stomperrob » Tue Mar 12, 2013 1:21 pm

He has a very low ceiling and hasn't done a heck of a lot to impress - the Bills def need to look elsewhere for a decent QB

During a secretly taped phone conversation, Bills GM Buddy Nix hinted that he sees Ryan Fitzpatrick as a backup.
Nix was shooting the breeze with Bucs GM Mark Dominik, unaware that the call was being recorded. When talks reached the subject of quarterbacks, it got ugly for Fitzpatrick, who counts $10.45M against the cap. "We just can't afford to pay that kind of money for a guy who's fighting for probably a backup job," Nix said. It confirms the Bills will force Fitzpatrick to redo his deal and bring in true competition for the starting gig via the draft or free agency.

I don't think Jackson is the answer:
Bills re-signed QB Tarvaris Jackson to a one-year contract with a maximum value of $4.5 million.
According to coach Doug Marrone, there will be an "open competition" between Jackson and Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting job. It could just be lip service, but reliable beat writer Joe Buscaglia wondered aloud on Twitter if T-Jax's return is the "beginning of the end for Ryan Fitzpatrick." It's quite possible a third quarterback will be added in the early rounds of the draft. In theory, Jackson is a better fit for the run-heavy system Marrone preferred at Syracuse. The Bills have made it clear the job won't be handed to Fitzpatrick, who's been far too inconsistent since signing a seven-year, $62.2 million deal in October 2011. Feb 15 - 12:05 PM

A bizarre day in Buffalo has ended quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick's tenure with the team. With a thud.

The Bills released Fitzpatrick on Tuesday on the same day that a recorded phone conversation surfaced in which Bills general manager Buddy Nix indicated that Fitzpatrick would be competing for a backup spot. The conversation was unfortunate, but it sounds like Fitzpatrick's future in Buffalo was nearing an end.

Buffalo saw Fitzpatick as a guy that would have to compete just to get snaps. Fitzpatrick was due $10 million and probably sees himself as a starter. After hearing Nix's comments, it's possible Fitzpatrick asked for his release and a fresh start.

Chan Gailey tried converting Fitzpatrick into a franchise quarterback, and overpaid him badly two years ago. The Bills will eat $10 million in dead money just to get rid of Fitzpatrick, who now becomes the best free-agent quarterback available in an awful market. At the very least, he can be a quality backup somewhere. It just won't be in Buffalo.

Anyone think he ends up in Arizona as a stopgap QB til they can draft someone in the better QB class next year?
