Detroit Lions safety Amari Spievey was arrested Tuesday in his hometown of Middletown, Conn., after a dispute with his live-in girlfriend and mother of his 2-year-old daughter, according to the Middletown Press.
Spievey was charged with Class C felony third-degree assault, Class A misdemeanor risk of injury to a child and Class C misdemeanor disorderly conduct. His girlfriend, Lisamarie Santos, also was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a child and disorderly conduct.
The incident, which occurred at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, reportedly was over child support. Spievey allegedly put his hand on Santos' neck and pushed her. Santos allegedly pushed Spievey and "threw a flurry of punches" at his chest.
Both appeared in Middletown Superior Court today, according to a court clerk. Judge David P. Gold issued protective orders against Spievey and Santos. Spievey received a residential protective order and must move out immediately. He would be allowed to return home one time, with police, to retrieve belongings. Santos received a partial protective order, which means she can remain in the residence. A hearing for was scheduled for April 11, with the family relations department of the court.
Spievey has played the last three seasons with the Lions, after being picked in the second round out of Iowa in 2010.
He missed most of last season with a concussion but agreed to a one-year contract with the Lions for 2013 earlier this month.
