Seahawks coach Pete Carroll acknowledged Thursday that Percy Harvin may need surgery to repair the tear in his hip labrum.
The injury happened while Harvin was working out on his own. Harvin will get a second opinion next week, but early signs appear grim. "When you spoke to people this afternoon about this injury," ESPN's Adam Schefter said, "they sounded concerned." The second opinion, in all likelihood, will confirm Harvin's need for surgery. Carroll is typically pretty vague on injury situations, but he was revealing in this case and we don't take that as a good thing. Should Harvin miss regular season time -- and that's now a very real possibility -- the Seahawks' three-receiver set would be Sidney Rice, Golden Tate, and Doug Baldwin.

My ever-expanding gut told me to expect something like this. Disappointing for Seahawks fans, terrible for those who drafted already and took him, and good news for those who will be drafting in several weeks. All the more reason to postpone drafts as long as possible.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports Percy Harvin would "likely" miss the entire 2013 season if a second opinion on his hip shows Harvin indeed needs surgery to repair his labrum tear.
La Canfora allows the second opinion still hasn't been formed -- it will be next Tuesday -- but his season is now in doubt. Early indications suggested Harvin will in all likelihood require surgery. The Seahawks will move forward with Doug Baldwin behind Golden Tate and Sidney Rice, just like last season. Harvin's loss would be quite a blow to Russell Wilson's 2013 fantasy ceiling. Carroll tells USA Today surgery would end Harvin’s season
Posted by Bob Condotta

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll did not speak to local reporters today. But he did speak to a visiting writer from USA Today and offered a potentially dire prediction for receiver Percy Harvin should a second opinion next week reveal that he would need surgery on his hip.

“If you have hip surgery, it’s a lot longer than the season,” Carroll told USA TODAY Sports in a story that published Friday night. “Hip surgery, he’s not going to play for the season.” The story, though, also reiterates what has been the general theme at Seahawks camp — that the organization thinks, and is hopeful, that Harvin won’t need surgery.

The story also appears to clarify a little of what happened here, that Harvin was initially cleared by the Seahawks but that Harvin didn’t feel comfortable and wanted a second opinion. That scenario would only add more fuel to the idea that this is the kind of think that seems to follow Harvin around, such as this story from ESPN.com speculating that maybe Harvin just doesn’t want to deal with training camp.

Receiver Sidney Rice, a teammate of Harvin’s in Minnesota, strongly supported Harvin in a separate ESPN.com interview today.

As all the stories detail, Harvin is set to get a second opinion in New York on Tuesday. So for now, it’s just lots of rumors and conjecture.

Percy Harvin tweeted Tuesday evening that his hip injury will require surgery.
Harvin hinted the operation will be season-ending in a follow-up tweet, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports he could return in 3-4 months. An official timeline should emerge in short order. It's obviously a devastating blow for the Seahawks, who were counting on Harvin adding a new dimension to their well-oiled read option attack. As it is, Golden Tate will revert to being Seattle's primary playmaker at receiver, while the onus will be on Sidney Rice (knee) to stay healthy. Between his signing bonus and salary, Harvin is bringing home $14.5 million this season after the Seahawks surrendered three draft picks — including their 2013 first-rounder — for his services.
