Patrick Willis - broken hand

Patrick Willis - broken hand

49ers ILB Patrick Willis has been diagnosed with a slight fracture in his right hand but is fully expected to be ready for Week 1.
Willis sustained the injury during a practice collision with FB Britt Miller. It's nothing new. Way back in 2005 at Ole Miss, Willis played most of the season with a club on his right hand due to a broken finger. In 2007 with the Niners, he didn't miss any games with a broken right hand and won DROY honors. He broke the same hand again in 2010 and played two full games before sitting out of a meaningless finale. Willis will take it easy in camp, but there's no reason to downgrade him on IDP boards. Willis is an IDP stud and we don't believe he will see any significant drop off in his production. It is only a fractured hand and Willis has proven to be one of the toughest NfL players out there. Last time he played through a broken hand he earned Defensive Rookie of the Year

Report: LB Willis undergoes surgery on broken hand
Posted on August 5, 2013 at 2:16 pm by Eric Branch in 49ers

All-Pro inside linebacker Patrick Willis recently had surgery on his broken right hand, but is expected to return to the field well before the 49ers’ regular-season opener, ESPN reported.

Willis, who fractured the hand in practice July 31, is expected to be sidelined for about three weeks. If he follows that timeline, he’ll be back about two weeks before San Francisco’s opener against Green Bay on Sept. 8.

The surgery marks the third procedure Willis has had on his right hand in the past three years. In 2010, Willis had pins inserted after breaking his hand in Dec. 12 game against the Seahawks. He sustained more damage to the hand in a game at St. Louis two weeks later, which required a second surgery. As a result, Willis missed the regular-season finale against Arizona, snapping his streak of 63 straight starts to begin his career.

Willis has broken his right hand three times during his six-year career. He played with a cast on it for part of his rookie season, but did not miss any games en route to leading the NFL in tackles. As a junior at Ole Miss, he played most of the season with a cast to protect a broken right middle finger and earned multiple first-team All-American honors.

In Willis’ absence, Michael Wilhoite has played alongside NaVorro Bowman with San Francisco’s first-string defense. Wilhoite, 26, spent most of the 2012 season on the practice squad before making a mark on special teams when he was promoted to the active roster in January.

Wilhoite, who had seven special-teams tackles in five regular-season games, tied for team-high honors with four special-teams stops in the postseason.

Niners are my team - Willis isn't any less effective with a club. He's been a beast before, and this did happen pretty early. He should be fine. Can't wait for the games to start! :-)
