The Giants won’t take any chances with their big-play receiver for the rest of the preseason. And they just have to hope that won’t hurt a big-play offense that hasn’t yet gotten untracked.
Cruz, who limped off the field in the early moments of Sunday night’s preseason loss to the Colts with what’s being called a bruised left heel, likely won’t practice throughout this week because of the injury, according to a source, and he probably won’t play again in the preseason. The foot was reportedly in a protective boot on Monday.
According to the source, the Giants don’t want to risk further injury on Saturday night against the Jets. The Giants visit New England in the final week of preseason, but their starters — including Cruz — aren’t likely to play in that game.
“We’ll see where he stands with (the injury) as the days go by,” Tom Coughlin said Monday. “We’ll have to take that one as it comes.”
Cruz’s injury will be the latest disruption for a Giants offense that’s struggled to get in rhythm throughout the preseason The Giants’ Eli Manning-led first-team offense has managed just one touchdown over the last two weeks — a 57-yard Manning-to-Cruz connection in the opener in Pittsburgh — and on several occasions, players have struggled to get on the same page as their quarterback.
