Clinton Portis Injury (and who will start if he doesn't)

Postby semi-charmed » Sun Dec 14, 2003 8:39 pm

Not good to see. Portis' extra few yards at the end gave me a little insurance, but without him next week I'll be hard-pressed to win. Anyone have any more updates? This is the latest I've heard:

Star running back Clinton Portis, who had 139 yards and two touchdowns, had to be helped off the field after spraining his right ankle and knee on the play before Elam's winning kick. X-rays were negative and Portis will have an MRI on Monday.

That sounds better than I expected, and hopefully it's just a light sprain, but Portis' owners may have to start planning on starting someone else.

Who would be the best pickup at this point, Mike Anderson or Quentin Griffin?

Any additional info would be appreciated.

I don't know anything new on Portis, but I'd bet that he plays next week.

HOWEVER, as a Portis owner I can tell you that I just picked up Griffin. It's not a lock but I figure it like this: Anderson was hurt earlier this year and was busted for weed possession. I can't imagine that Shanahan liked that. Griffin has gotten some gametime and has practiced with the team all year.

Anderson wasn't suspended for posession, he was suspended for failing a drug test, and he protested it because he was under the legal limit (he claimed it was second-hand smoke).

I'm pretty sure Griffin was deactivated for today's game. Anderson is more proven (he had stats similar to Portis' in his rookie season).

From what I can see, Anderson is the best pickup for now. Hopefully it won't matter and Portis will be good to go.

riiight...second hand smoke.

I'm sure Shanahan believed that just like we all do.

Just pointing out that it wasn't posession, which would also incur legal issues.

I hadn't heard about this. Thanks guys. I hope he is OK. I need him for the Super Bowl. I think I will pick up both of them.

No that's a good point. He won't be going to court.

However, getting busted by your team for blatantly illegal activity and the publicity that it brings compounded by tossing off an excuse that looked weak when Clinton (Bill, not Portis) tried it 10 years ago isn't exactly endearing. It's like: "Not only did I do something illegal, but now I'm gonna lie about it." He needs a new PR guy.

However, I agree with you in the end. ;-D

I just checked the box score and Shanahan had him in as a fullback today and gave him a carry. That tells me that he's clawed his way back into Shanahan's good graces. And he definitely is more proven than Griffin.
