I have been trying to figure out for a while now why the cheifs took larry johnson in the first round. it seems to me the last thing they need is a runningback and lj is not even 2nd string. anyone have any reasoning on why they took him and why hes not even 2nd string

Priest Holmes is not exactly the youngest RB in the league. He has some good years left in him but someone will need to take his place in the near future. Johnson was arguably the best RB in the draft so they thought he could be a good fit to replace Holmes when he got older. Seems pretty clear to me

but with more pressing needs on defence it does seem slightly odd but you can never really have too many RB's but did they not realize he was from Penn State?

You have to remember that LJ is from Penn State. Who was the last RB to do good in the NFL from there? If I was the Chiefs I would have taken a chance on McGahee before I would have taken LJ. That way by the time Priest wants to hang 'em up Willis can be at full health and have practiced and step in. Instead they have to deal with LJ sitting on the sidelines criticizing the management and not wanting to be there. I don't think LJ has what it takes to be a good NFL back.

Yes, but the Chiefs management obviously saw something in LJ that they liked better the Mcgahee. NFL coaches wont pass up on a RB solely because he went to a college where RB's dont pan out in the NFL. Im just answering the question as to why they took a RB, Larry Johnson. It may have not been the right choice and it may come back to haunt them but they had theyre reasons for drafting him.

Yea, I know. I have never seen him play and they probably know more than I do but with Priest I would have rathed take a chance on McGahee.

There were two reasons why the took LJ:

1) Priest's hip injury status was still uncertain at the time.

2) They were trying to pressure Priest in to signing an extension.
