I don't like that. To many players usually studs sit in week 17 to rest for the playoffs. Not a good idea. Our league ends in week 16 which seems to work pretty good.

The most common reason you'll hear is presumably:
more football = good :-)

the best reason i could think of would be for scheduling purposes. some leagues might find it better suited to have 15 weeks of regular season scheduling and then have 2 weeks of playoffs after that. i personally don't much like week 17 championship games, but oh well.

I refuse to join a league that has a week 17 championship game.

Why? I do not want a whole season and planning and strategy to be thrown by the wayside so I can pick up some WW fodder to fill my roster because starters are being rested.

It almost happened to me this year anyway due to Bruce and Warrick being out - we start 2 WR's - and I was fortunate to grab Charles Lee (nice!) and Dane Looker (ugh!).

my league had 14 weeks of regular season, then 3 weeks of playoffs. I really dont know why though.

I would say because people just don't realize that happens until it's too late. I'm in a league where this happened and I just didn't think about it until a few weeks ago. I think the default playoff weeks should be 15 and 16.

I'M RUNNING A LEAGUE RIGHT NOW WITH THIS FORMAT, AND I AGREE IT IS NOT GOOD, IT WASN'T INTENDED , THOUGH, JUST A SMALL OVERSIGHT ON MY PART WHEN I THREW IT ALL TOGETHER.LIKE THAT OTHER GUY SAID, I DIDN'T REALIZE THIS UNTIL A FEW WEEKS AGO, AND NEITHER DID ANYONE IN MY LEAGUE. OH WELL, I'M IN IT ANYWAY BUT I ALSO HAVE HOLMES AND J LEWIS, SO HOPEFULLY FOR ME THEY PLAY ENOUGH TO GET THEIR RESPECTIVE RECORDS AND THAT WILL BE FINE WITH ME.
THIS IS MY 2ND YEAR IN FF AND MY 1ST TIME RUNNING A LEAGUE AND I CAN GUARUNTEE THAT NEXT YEAR MY SUPERBOWL WILL BE IN WEEK 16.ALL THE SAME , THOUGH NO ONE IN MY LEAGUE COMPLAINED ABOUT IT.

And as written, I cannot argue against that logic. Especially since I would love to have some personnel decisions to make for next weekends games. I'm not saying I'd want to play a playoff game on week 17, but I read somewhere about setting it up for a last week of games just for fun. Cash prizes optional. I would've loved for my league to have thought of this.
Place this lament under the heading of shell-shocked, ff jones-ing. What happened to my beloved season, where did it all go? Such hope and dreams, why did it have to end. WHY...WHY...WHY And so early in the day to start drinking. And the cycle continues...
