Feds Will Investigate Janet Jackson Flash February 2, 2004 05:34 PM EST NEW YORK - The chief federal regulator of broadcasting was outraged by the Super Bowl halftime show and ordered an investigation after part of Jackson's costume was torn off, exposing her breast.
Janet Jackson's boobylicious performance with Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl halftime show has sparked a federal investigation, and set new standards for raunch in an entertainment industry that seems to be setting new highs - or lows - every single day.
Gone are the days when a powerful performance is all that was needed to deliver a watercooler moment. Nowadays, a barely there outfit, same-sex smooching or foul language - and now, a flash of nudity - are what's required to get America talking.
"Every time an artist does something you think they sort of break the barrier, and it keeps getting more and more outrageous," said Tom Poleman, senior vice president of programming at New York City radio station Z100. "I think artists will keep on exploiting every opportunity they can get."
When Timberlake snatched off part of Jackson's bustier, revealing a breast clad only in a sun-shaped "nipple shield," the barrier was not broken - it was shattered before an estimated 89 million viewers.
Federal Communications Commission chief Michael Powell said in a statement, "Like millions of Americans, my family and I gathered around the television for a celebration. Instead, that celebration was tainted by a classless, crass and deplorable stunt." He promised an investigation, with potential fines of up to $27,500 or - if applied to each CBS station - in the millions.
The display coincided exactly with Timberlake singing, "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song".
All involved have denied that it was planned.
My 9 year-old son was real impressed.
Me? 30-something Janet shoulda got MORE for her money, IMO.
Especially considering LARGE trouble from the feds.
Fines upto only @27,500..that is ridiculously low, IMO. Joe Horn was fined $50,000 for the cell phone celebration; which was pretty cool and liked by so many people.
I wonder what the NFL would do if some player, probably arrogant Meshaw Johnson shows off his dick as a TD celebration.
I think it is the same level as what MTV and Janet Jackson did yesterday.
Whats up with the Jackson family? Michael and Janet just cant stay out of trouble.
That is exactly what I said.
I didn't find it sexy or even particularly shocking.
I found it just plain stupid.
A pathetic attempt to get some attention.

It is a sad pathetic recipe to try to revive a faded music career. Show some more flesh, kiss Madonna, kiss Britny. Whatever, just whores selling out for the cameras. The crime was doing it knowignly in such a family oriented forum. They knew what they were doing, but didn't care as much about those who may be offended or even confused (My 7 year old niece had a lot of questions, the most revealing being a pre-breast "Who's she"?)
Sad, especially when you think that Miss Jackson should have known about those Nasty Boys.
I think, therefore I am. I think fantasy, therefore I am unreal?

I don't think they get fined, CBS does. And it will actually be millions b/c it is $27,500 for every CBS affiliate/station. They have a whole lot of stations throughout the US.
