ever... My List:
1) Ramones - really the very first, and while not the most talented, the most fun. True groundbreakers.
2) Clash - Took it to a whole new level, helped put Led Zepp into the ground as "the Greatest band alive". The opening chords of "Clash City Rockers" still sends chills up my spine... I know what's coming.
3) Sex Pistols - gotta give them cred regardless of Malcolm and dumbass, talentless Sid, Lydon still is a brilliant provocateur.
4) Nirvana - yes, Cobain was as punk as they come. It's more about attitude than musical style.
5) X - Los Angeles punk at it's best... Doe and Exene=Brilliance.
6) Fear - a personal indulgence, completely stupid and offensive, but I like it. Lee Ving loves living in the city!
7) Fugazi - strait-edge brilliance out of the Minor Treat/DC scene.
8) Gang of Four - Overlooked, smart, jarring & jagged, a personal fav.
9) Rancid - Completely rip off the Clash... and do it brilliantly and with respect and great musicianship.
10) Butthole Surfers - sadly, now look to be another drug casuality band . BUT, their shows in the eighties were some of the most intense, rocking, and absolutely crazy, scary things I've ever witnessed. I literally feared for my life at more than one show. Made Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie look like frickin' doe-eyed, talentless, little girls.

Lead singer Mike Ness' vocal cords were once described as being roughed up w/sandpaper,then cooled down w/bourbon.
Considered them for the #9) slot... was at the infamous Milwaukee Social D riot at Cafe Voltaire in about '85 when they shut down the place due to being "over capacity". 30 some squad cars and a couple hundred kids milling about in the street. Not Good. Unbelievably the cops ended up getting crucified by the press. Anyhow, went with Rancid as I've recently discovered their catalog and found a great respect for a band I always considered as somewhat a joke. Still, gotta agree, definate props to SocD.

Very hard to do, especially depending on how strict you want to be for the classification of "punk". A somewhat broad list. Some may be borderline as being a punk band. Off the top of my head:
1. Ramones
2. The Clash
3. The Stooges
4. Sex Pistols
5. The Damned
6. Minor Threat
7. The Dead Boys
8. The Dead Kennedys
9. Sonic Youth
10.Nirvana (i agree w/ earlier post)
11.Fugazi
12.Pennywise
11.UK Subs
12.The Descendants
13.Distillers
14.Suicide Machines
15.X
16.Black Flag
17..Rancid
18.Screeching Weasel
19.Social D.(like some Ness solo too)
20.The Buzzcocks
21.Dead Milkmen
Oh yes, the Stooges gotta be up there, pioneering stuff.
The Dead Milkmen - Wow! Now they were a fun band.
...and anyone familiar with BIG BLACK (uber-producer Steve Albini's first band), now there was a full-frontal assault. Scary good live.
