Walter Jones...

Postby Canacuna » Fri Feb 20, 2004 12:56 am

NFL teams have until February 24 to use their franchise tag, which means it's time for the Seattle media to trudge out their annual article about left tackle Walter Jones. The three-time Pro Bowler has played each of the last two seasons under the franchise label, and there's a good chance that Jones will make it three in a row. As the franchise player, Jones would be guaranteed $7.09 million in 2004. However, the Seahawks are trying to avoid the move by signing the lineman to a long-term deal. Jones and his agent, Roosevelt Barnes, also want a long-term agreement, and the two sides are reportedly in discussions. "That's really out of our hands," Barnes told the Seattle Times. "We'd like [a larger deal], but it's not really up to us."

Forgive us if we don't sound overly optimistic. The Seahawks have always wanted a long-term deal. Jones and Barnes have always wanted a long-term deal. Yet, despite the base desires of both sides, no agreement has ever been reached. Jones missed all of training camp in 2002 and did not play until week three. In 2003, he showed up at the very end of training camp and played the entire season. The Seahawks' offense doesn't run very smoothly without their cornerstone tackle, and we sincerely hope that the two sides can put a halt to this annual soap opera. We're just not holding our breath.

...Things just wouldn't be the same if Walter Jones wasn't franchised and missed training camp. :,-(

...Although I wouldn't mind the annual event was discontinued if they were able to finally agree on a long-term deal... ;-D

It's so much more expensive to franchise a player than to sign him to a deal. If he's gonna cost you that much every year, just let him walk.

you know I hate to say it..

but if anyone else didn't notice...he didn't play like a 7mil/year LT.

He didn't play bad at all...but I sure as heck didn't think he was Jonathan Ogden's peer.
Only 3 leagues this year. No sense in rooting for everyone in the NFL.
