According to league sources, Owens and his agent, David English, missed the deadline to file the necessary paperwork with the 49ers and the NFL's management council in order to void the final three years of his contract. That means Owens' rights revert back to the 49ers and his only way out of San Francisco would be via a trade, the sources said.
Rather than seeing him leave and getting nothing in return, the 49ers can now field trade offers for Owens, who has had a contentious relationship with quarterback Jeff Garcia in San Francisco.

Good job boys. You are a star in all our eyes! Send him to the CFL.

Above is from Fox sports. The "good job" part is from me.

I wouldnt be surprised if Owens and his agent dont find some way to circumvent this rule.

Nevertheless, what a strange...strange...strange offseason this is.

I'm just waiting for Barry Sanders to come back now.

I think your title is a bit biased. His agent is as much to blame as T.O. if not more. That's what a player plays his agent for, to be on top of administrative type duties among other things.

Awwchrist, I heard a rumor that the Hawks are in negotiations with Detroit for the rights of Barry Sanders. They are looking to trade Shaun Alexander for him.

And Seattle fans complain about Shaun not being enough of a North and South runner....I don't know if they could handle Barry.

Isn't this the exact same thing that happened to Dennis Northcutt? I've never heard of this before, and now it happens twice on the same day? Something must be up...

yeah I think he was, lol

Anyway why do you call him an idiot? Actually he may be smarter than all of you think. As a FA he gets a new deal and is off to a new team, and the 9ers get a 3rd round compensatory pick. By not signing he gets traded to a new team, they get a player in return, AND San Fran takes a huge hit to their cap next year. His signing bonus is guaranteed from SF and if they trade him they have to pay it not the team that trades for him. This will be crucial because they just franchised Peterson and signed Barlow to a long term contract. Looks like to me he gets what he wants and gets a cheap shot at the 9ers owners. They get an upgrade from 3rd round pick to whatever but end up having to pay more in the long run.

I don't really think some teams are gonna give up a first and third round pick AND take on some of that salary too boot to get him though.
