Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey announced his retirement at a Tuesday afternoon press conference.

McCaffrey called it quits after spending the last nine years of his 13-year career with the Broncos. He spent his first three seasons with the New York Giants and also played one year with San Francisco before joining the Broncos in 1995.

In 12 games this past season, McCaffrey caught just 19 passes for 195 yards without a touchdown. He battled a right leg injury during the year and suffered a concussion in the season-finale against Green Bay that forced him to miss the club's playoff loss to Indianapolis.

McCaffrey ranks fourth in Broncos' history with 462 receptions and third in receiving touchdowns with 46. He also helped the club win back-to-back Super Bowls after the 1997 and '98 seasons.

His career nearly ended in the first game of the 2001 season when he suffered a broken right leg. He was coming off a 101-catch campaign in 2000 and had three 1,000-yard seasons before the injury.

For his career, the Stanford product has 565 catches and 55 touchdowns.
