Armstead headed to Carolina

Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Panthers agreed to a one-year contract with linebacker Jessie Armstead on Friday.

The 33-year-old Armstead, who was released this offseason by Washington, is expected to compete for a starting job at outside linebacker for Carolina with Mark Fields.

Armstead played two seasons with the Redskins after spending nine years with the New York Giants. The five-time Pro Bowl selection posted 91 tackles and a team-high 6 1/2 sacks last season.
