Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tuesday signed free agent running back Charlie Garner. Terms of Garner's contract were not released by the Bucs, as per team policy.
Garner, who played the past three seasons for the Oakland Raiders, put together back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 1999 and 2000 as a member of the San Francisco 49ers.
For his career, which began in 1994 in Philadelphia, Garner has gained 6,986 yards on 1,507 carries with 39 touchdowns . He also has 410 career receptions for 3,649 more yards and 12 scores.
Since becoming a full-time starter with the 49ers in 1999, Garner has emerged as one of the league's best multi-purpose threats out of the backfield. Over the past five seasons, he has averaged nearly 100 yards of total offense per game and scored 34 touchdowns.
Last season, knee and back injuries, plus a one-game suspension, limited Garner to 14 games and nine starts. Though he was limited to his lowest rushing (553 yards) and receiving (386 yards) totals in five years, Garner still averaged 4.6 yards per carry and scored four touchdowns.
Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden was Garner's offensive coordinator in Philadelphia from 1995-97 and head coach in Oakland in 2001.
