#1 pick in a rookie draft! Can I/Should I take Winslow?

Postby DanDaMan » Thu Mar 18, 2004 1:16 am

I have the first pick in this years rookie draft in my dynasty league. My team is as follows

Trent Green (1 year remaining on contract)
C. Palmer (1)
P. Ramsey (2)

C. Portis (5)
D. Davis (6)
William Green (4)
Lee Suggs (1)

Hines Ward (2)
Anquan Boldin (2)
Charles Rogers (5)
Jevon Walker (1)

I don't have a TE yet....(I will need to draft one or pick one up)

John Hall (1)

Carolina Def (2)

I really like Winslow! I think he will be the best TE of our time. I just have a problem taking him with the 1st rookie pick. With this rookie I will be able to sign him to a 6 year contract to add to my team. In my league we start 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Def. What should I do. Should I take the best RB available or draft Winslow Jr?

This is a 12 team dynasty league. I think Winslow is a safe pick. What do you think?

Hes fine.. The rookie draft is a good time to get the best available player at a postion you need. Some years, maybe not, but theres no player whose going to be an instant stud this year, so you shouldnt be ridiculed for taking Winslow.

its incredibly hard to tell because we dont know where he's heading yet. Manning could get selected by a team like the Chargers and immediately start, in which case he might be the better choice. TEs are really a crap-shoot with the exception of all of about 3 in the NFL, so locking up a long term top notch TE is a great idea, but if it doesnt pan out, you lose out on a lot better options in this draft.

Does your leagues draft take place, before, or after the NFL draft. If after, wait until then and I'm sure you'll get better and informed responses.

Our rookie draft takes place right before the pre-season. I would not even consider taking a QB. I would either look at Kevin Jones or Stephen Jackson instead. I just really like Winslow. I think that he is a great athlete and is a sure thing no matter what team he goes to. An alternative would be to take the best RB available and then sign another free agent as my TE (Gates from SD or Teyo Johnson Oak).

Winslow would make a good pick, but I would look at trading down a few spots. I think he'll still be there later, and you might be able to grab another pick or some form of compensation for that #1 Rookie Pick. Someone will want Fitz, Williams, Big Ben or Eli even if you do not.

I agree. ;-D It'd be a near waste of a #1 pick if you don't trade down. The only time i wouldnt trade down is if someone near you was looking at winslow too.

Yeah, I say you should try to trade down if you can. If not, it might be wise just to take Eli because your QB's aren't great...

I agree with Slow.......taking Winslow first would be too high. He may be good, but if you can swap down a couple of spots with an owner who needs RB or QB depth then Winslow would still be there when you pick.

Also, what happens if say Steven Jackson goes to a team like Denver? I'm sure you'd rethink your choice then huh?
