ACR - "Thinking Outside the Box?"

Q. Dear CR,
People are always advising me to think outside the box. But I don't see any boxes. I've looked everywhere, but always come up boxless no matter how many times I search. Also, now I'm beginning to worry that when I finally do locate a box it will turn out to be the wrong box! But my question for you is this: How do you explain the fact that I'm not inside any box right now and thus, ipso facto, am already thinking outside the box? Are the people telling me to think outside the box blind? Surely they must realize that they are clinging to outmoded ideas!

A. Dear John,
We are all inside of a box of some sort. Some people create extensive emotional shields to protect them from what they feel is an oppressive, brutal outside world. Others create actual cardboard boxes and paint racing stripes on them to make them go faster. Zoom! Mine is red.
