The Chicago Bears have asked for—and received—permission to talk with Tim Couch and his agent, Tom Condon.
The Bears are the second team to open discussions with Couch. He previously visited and negotiated with the Packers, who are searching for an eventual replacement for Brett Favre.
It was thought that Green Bay might acquire Couch in a draft-day trade last weekend, but no deal was worked out. The Packers did not draft a quarterback.
The signing of Jeff Garcia and the drafting of Luke McCown likely signaled the end of Couch’s five-year stint in Cleveland. Couch is under contract with the Browns through the 2005 season.
Second-year pro Rex Grossman figures to enter the 2004 season as Chicago’s starting QB. Last year’s opening day starter, Kordell Stewart, was released following the season. The Bears added veteran backup Jonathan Quinn in March and drafted Ohio State’s Craig Krenzel in the fifth round last weekend.
The Browns host the Bears in the preseason finale for both teams on September 3. The Bears will return to Cleveland for a regular season game in 2005.
