so they have Grossman, Quinn, and Krenzel. they had Kordy Stewart and now he's gone...so I guess Couch would be the next in line...lol

The Chicago Bears have asked for—and received—permission to talk with Tim Couch and his agent, Tom Condon.

The Bears are the second team to open discussions with Couch. He previously visited and negotiated with the Packers, who are searching for an eventual replacement for Brett Favre.

It was thought that Green Bay might acquire Couch in a draft-day trade last weekend, but no deal was worked out. The Packers did not draft a quarterback.

The signing of Jeff Garcia and the drafting of Luke McCown likely signaled the end of Couch’s five-year stint in Cleveland. Couch is under contract with the Browns through the 2005 season.

Second-year pro Rex Grossman figures to enter the 2004 season as Chicago’s starting QB. Last year’s opening day starter, Kordell Stewart, was released following the season. The Bears added veteran backup Jonathan Quinn in March and drafted Ohio State’s Craig Krenzel in the fifth round last weekend.

The Browns host the Bears in the preseason finale for both teams on September 3. The Bears will return to Cleveland for a regular season game in 2005.

Cripes! When will they learn? First Chandler, then Kordell, now Couch? Meanwhile Jeff George is probably pan-handling outside Soldier Field.

Give it Grossman and let him learn!!!

Couch actually may not be a bad fit in Chi-town. They had some decent games with Chandler last year. Seems a QB who can stay in the pocket and pass with any accuracy makes DaBears recievers much better. I hope he doesn't go there because I hate DaBears, but I hope he lands somewhere as a starter. He has better skills that many starters. McCown, pick a Phins QB (argueable), Brees/Rivers, E-cry Manning, Big Ben/Mad-Ox, Bledsoe, ect. There are teams he could help until their young QBs are ready. I am not a Couch fan but I think he be under-rated and a product of bad coaching/play-calling in Browntown.
In the right circumstance he could be a servicable QB.

I like Tim Couch, and like mooch said, he can be solid in the right circumstances. I don't think Chicago is that, though. They already have a young guy in Rex Grossman who may be capable of being a steady QB for them. No sense in adding another year of QB controversy in Chicago, methinks.

Am I missing something here? Didn't they just spend a first round pick on a guy that came in during the year and played pretty damn well AS A ROOKIE??

What happened to the Packers being interested in Couch?

Still negotiating. Couch probably has the best chance of landing a decent backup job, with a possible starting future, of the 3 big vets out there (Couch, Warner, Collins). Depends if Couch wants to wait a year or two behind Favre, or take the risk in Chicago, and hope Grossman Falters. I know riding the pine is tough, but I think Green Bay holds a better future for Couch than Chicago. Grossman looks pretty good to me. Low demand, bad year to be a veteran free-agent QB.

I like Grossman, I was hoping the Packers would get him last year. Then again, Nick Barnett turned out alright. :-)
