Good article on the RB situation and system in Denver.
Patrick Saunders, Denver Post - RB Clinton Portis no longer is a Bronco. Traded to Washington for Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, Portis now wears Redskins burgundy and gold. Which raises the central question of the Broncos' 2004 season: Which RB will fly the orange and blue colors? The answer likely depends on which RB masters the Broncos' system.
I believe that Bell is going to be given the best chance to be the starting running back there. I really like the guy, but I like anybody in that Denver running system. (Like when I got portis in the last round 2 years ago!) I think Bell wins that job, but time will tell.
Shanahan has said he would consider a running back by committee this season, but would like to see one back emerge as the Broncos' go-to guy.
"If you have one guy that you call your 'stud buffalo,' that you say is your guy, and he wants the rock in his hand, wants to carry it 35 or 40 times a game, then obviously we could go in that direction," Shanahan said after trading Portis to Washington.
I hope so for fantasy's sake as well. Given the system and the line that is still intact, whoever it is would have to be a mid-late 2nd round choice and a solid #2 RB.
