Ok, what exactly do webmasters do when they tell people they're performing site maintenance?

Does anybody else have the vague suspicion that they're just using so much bandwidth downloading mp3's for their music collections that the site doesn't run as smoothly as usual? "What? Glitches on the site? Um... oh yeah, that's because I'm working extra hard on um, uh... site maintenance! Yeah, that's it, site maintenance..."
