Hotmail hits back...

Postby Homeless » Fri Jun 25, 2004 2:42 am

From July the basic Hotmail allowance will be boosted to 250MB and paying customers will get two gigabytes.

The move is widely seen as a response to Google's GMail service which gives all users a gigabyte of storage to keep all their messages.

With the announcement, Hotmail becomes one of a growing pool of e-mail firms offering users huge amounts of storage.

Size matters

Currently, paying customers of Microsoft's Hotmail get at least 10MB of storage space and those who use it for free have 2MB for their old messages.

Boosting storage limits means Hotmail must revamp its charging system which is based around a "pay more to store more" system.

The new service with the boosted storage will be called Hotmail Plus and will cost $19.95 per year. Users who currently pay more for storage will be moved across to this service.

Users of Hotmail Plus will also be able to send messages with attachments up to 20MB in size

Gmail - 1GB storage, 10MB attachments
Hotmail Plus - $19.95 per year, 2GB storage, 20MB attachments
Hotmail free - 250MB storage, 10MB attachments
Yahoo Mail Plus - £11.99, 2GB storage, 10MB attachments
Yahoo Free - 100MB of storage, 10MB attachments
Lycos UK Personal - £41.88 per year, 1GB storage, 50MB attachments
Lycos UK - free, 10MB storage
Spymac - free, 1GB storage
Ask Jeeves - free, 250MB storage
Ask Jeeves Excite Gold - $19.99 per year, 2GB storage
Shiremail - £42 per year, 1GB storage

Ha, and one week ago we were all like "Holy crap, Yahoo is giving out a ton of free storage..."

Now it's the smallest of the bunch. How long before they up their space again?

I didn't like Hotmail because my account kept getting deactivated...I still don't see why anyone would want 1 GB of email storage other than to just say they have it.

This is definitely good for users as Im sure they will both keep trying to have the most space. But like Mercer said, how much space do people really need?

I guess its knowing you have the extra space in case you need it that makes the difference. Could be a status thing too. I'm more than happy with Microsoft Outlook ;-D

Seeing as how I really don't wanna have to pay for any email service, I'm quite happy with my 1GB through gmail. I must say that I filled up my old yahoo account on more than one occasion, through some attachments and such. I also like to attach images to my emails, when making different things for people such as banners, so the 10MB attachment limit is a lot nicer than yahoo's old limit.

I had a hotmail account but I didn't like the layout of the page and found it less convenient, maybe because I was used to yahoo, but I just like to be able to see how many messages I have total from the first page when you login, not just the messages you have from your contacts. Yes, I'm lazy, so I'll be using gmail...

Same here. Still the most storage you can get for free.

Yahoo! still works for me. I mean, 100MB of storage is more that enough for me. I usually chck my email once or twice a day. So, it's not like it's gonna fill up in 8 hours...

I'm still sticking with Yahoo!. ;-D
