Chess a sport?

Postby Poobah » Wed Jun 30, 2004 9:25 am

I love lists, surprised I don't post more of them here, actually. But ESPN's page 2 did a column on the best sports movies of the past 25 years, and included Searching For Bobby Fischer at something like #23, 24, or 25. I was kinda irritated. If it's not a sports movie, don't include it, I wouldn't complain. But to put the thing that low disparages, in my opinion, what was a truly excellent movie.

So another column comes out, with the best sports moments in any movie, and I was a little more pleased with how this one turned out:

I here ya Poobah - I watched ESPN's top 25 sports movies last night. The list they have on ESPN right now of the top 20 are much different than the list on the show they aired. From the show:

Is Jerry McGuire a sports movie? :-?

They had Rudy at 23rd I believe - a little low for me.

Rocky didnt even make the top 25? 8-o

Bull Durham was more of a chick flick than a sports movie - so I hated that in the top 5.

Hoosiers as the #1 sounds alright to me.

From the website's top 20:

Durham #1? :-t
Rocky #2 - thats fine, but no mention of it in the shows version?
I also like how Slap Shot made the top 10 on the website, but no mention of it in the show.

Seems to be a lot of discrepancy.

As for Searching for Bobby Fischer - no, chess isnt a sport IMO.

Rocky has been more than 25 years. And I'm okay with the chess movie not being considered sports. But if it is, jack it up into the Top 10, because it is a HELLUVA movie

Ahhhh, that was great, I was laughing as I recalled some of the scenes mentioned in the list. Funny seeing Naked gun up there , but what a classic scene. ;-D

If you can eat while doing it, it isn't a sport. B-)

I was a chessplayer in high school. I wouldn't call it a sport in the traditional sense, but it's certainly competitive. Studies have shown that during games, chess players will respond like they are in the midst of physical activity: Increased heart rate and respiration, sweating, etc etc. It's very intensive in its own way.

Searching for Bobby Fischer wasn't too bad a movie. Larry Fishburne is one of my favorite actors, so anything he acts in is worth a viewing to me. For the record, that movie had nothing to do with Bobby Fischer.

Im a fairly competive chess player (yes, im a HUGE nerd), and i dont consider chess a sport. And yes, there are chess teachers. Their are chess tournaments with prizes of many, many thousands of dollars and the world championship is for millions. http://www.uschess.org if you want more info.
