Ricks signs with Jets

Postby KingGhidra » Fri Jul 09, 2004 12:29 am

Randy Lange, of the Bergen Record, reports the New York Jets have signed free agent TE Mikhael Ricks to an undisclosed contract. Ricks comes to New York after being released by the Detroit Lions June 11 in a cost-cutting measure. He received fair interest as a free agent, most notably from the Washington Redskins and Green Bay Packers, before finally landing with the Jets.

I'm surprised it too this long.

This absolutely kills Becht's fantasy value...

if there is such a thing.

I'm kinda surprised by this actually. I thought Chris Baker showed some nice reps last season. Oh well.

I thought I had read that the Jets wanted to use their TEs a lot more this year and were talking up Becht and Baker in mini-camp. I guess they didnt really show much....

Unless Ricks has developed the ability to "catch" the ball... I wouldn't worry too much if you have other Jets TE's.

He wasn't released for "cost cutting"... he lost his starting job after we lost count of his drops in Detroit. He needs some major improvement before I'd take him in FFL. He has the tools to be a stud TE in the league, but he was terrible last year.

I was about to post the same thing. Plus, he's pretty much useless with blocking, methinks.

If I was forced to take a Jets TE (which would be the only way I ever would), I'd still go with Anthony Becht.

Mikhael Ricks is similar to Stephen Alexander - plenty of potential, but usually turns out to be a waste of money.

I thought they dropped Ricks b/c he cant block, where Alexander can. And now that DET has Rogers back, R. Williams, and Streets they really dont need a receiving TE.

Exactly. Costcutting was not the issue at all with Ricks. He struggles blocking, numerous drops, and was hurt quite a bit.

Of course Alexander has the injury bug too, but i think he can catch a little bit.

Not sure what good having 3 pass catching TEs on the Jets does for them when their blocking ability is suspect.

And so many of us were claiming just this week how becht could be valuable...
I dont think Ricks will do too much there anyway, but then again its another weapon for penny ;-D

I don't blame you there! I don't want a Jet TE either.
