Draft day ideas

Postby GMensouth » Sat Jul 10, 2004 9:06 am

I've been running a league for several years and am always looking for new ideas to make our live draft better and more fun. What kinds of things are you guys doing for you draft?

I was thinking about purchasing a giant white board/chalk board for all the draft picks...of course I have no idea how much this would cost. We may just deduct it from the league $, as everyone will be putting in $80.

I'm really at a loss...I mean...what else could you possibly do on draft day to make it any more interesting? Hell, it's the one day out of the year that you shouldn't have to embellish any league activities through promotion...it's freakin DRAFT DAY!

Add in some league overhead $$$ like we did and buy a keg for the event. Drink Sharp's and let everyone get good and blitzed so that it skews their judgment during the draft so that you can soak up all the top tier talent ;-D

We make it a complete "Guy's Weekend" where we can leave the women and children at home. We've done fishing trips and golf trips. We've even gone to Chicago and Vegas. And we usually hold the draft in a meeting room at the hotel we stay at on Saturday night, often with our very own bartender on site.

In addition, we usually offer extra draft picks to keep us all in the gambling spirit. For example, during the golf outting, the winner was awarded an extra draft pick in round 9 (while the loser had to fetch beer all weekend long). We have similar competitions with our March Madness Brackets and NCAA Bowl Games Pool, offering extra draft picks as incentives - keeping us involved even in the Fantasy Football Hell known as the off-season.

I'm with aww on this one. To me, Draft Day is like Christmas. You spend all this time prepping for it and it's over in a matter of hours. Wish I could draft every day. Nothing like the excitement of draft day.

Even more reason to make it a full weekend. Arriving on Friday night for a late night of brews, whiskey shots, and Golden Tee, followed by a Saturday deep-sea fishing excursion helps build the drama and anticipation of the draft Saturday night. Otherwise its over too quickly.
