Ok, i had a cooler name for this thread: "Shipp is not sh*t" but i thought it would be wrong to put that out in the open. Anyways, about 2 months ago every draft i was a part of or saw Shipp was going in the 4th round or so. Then, Green names Emmitt the starter for now, and all of the sudden Shipp is going in the 7th or 8th round. In yahoo, he is anked extremely low, i get him in the 10-11 round of EVERY draft im in. I just read a post where a guy said he dropped Shipp for Tatum Bell...
The only reason Green names Smith the starter is so Shipp realizes hes gotta wokr his ass off in training camp and be prepared to battle for his position. Its only a matter of time (i.e. week 1, maybe 2 or 3) before Shipp takes over and Smith assumes a Bettis type role. So yah im saying Marcel Shipp should have about the same role as Duce Staley. Im not saying Shipp=Holmes, but im wondering how anyone can think that Shipp is going to backup Emmitt Smith.
I think you can expect Marcel Shipp to assume a VERY similar role to Duce Staley, thus making him a solid 5th round pickup. and if no one here agrees with me, i will be VERY content with continuing to draft him in rounds 9 thru 11 in EVERY draft im in.
First of all - I agree that after the 9th rd is solid value for Shipp.
But - my initial response to the Emmitt news was much the same as yours - Green is doing this to light a fire under Shipp. However, as this situation plays out, we might see that Green is dead serious about keeping the old man as his starter. ARI offense lacks leadership - no doubt about it - and Emmitt brings that - Shipp doesnt. We all can agree that ARI will be throwing a lot - and I think Green understands that too - thats why he is willing to let Emmitt start - not necessarily because of talent and physical attributes, but rather the intangible factor of having Smith in the huddle.
I think Greens thinking can be summed up like this:
If they arent going to run much anyways, why not put the leader in?
All that being said - Shipp after the 9th is value, but Emmitt drafted even later could be a sleeper. Did you ever think you would hear Emmitt Smith being described as a sleeper?
Jul 20 Mike Jurecki, of AZCardinals.com, citing a July 18 report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green remains confident in his decision to start RB Emmitt Smith over RB Marcel Shipp this season. "I wanted to make sure that Emmitt was on board," Green said. "He had to accept his role. It was clear that he would. The problem was that Marcel was not ready to accept a leadership role. Emmitt can still play; he's going to make those big guys in our offensive line start blocking."
A) Shipp sucks
B) The Cards just arn't going to run the ball that much.....and Shipp can't block, catch, or provide leadership nearly as effectively as Emmitt.
Go ahead and bet on Shipp, but I'm not expecting much. 9th round, sure I might grab Shipp.....5th round, you're crazy.
if the cards were any good, i wouldnt mind smith or shipp on my team.....as my last bench spot....
No way is shipp or smith for that matter breaking top 25 backs, which means, neither is really worth a pickup before the 10th.. so yes, shipp isnt bad at all after the 9th, but to draft him in the 5th round is nuttier than squirl poop.
As said before, he didn't score last year. Only had 2 games over 100 yards out of the 11 he started. Plus he's on a team who's best weapons are its widereceivers. You know Green is going to throw, throw, throw. When they get near the endzone it'll be fades to Boldin or Fitzgerald to try to score.
You are better off spending that pick on a Foster or Jackson who could potentially blow up if certain things fall into place.

I really haven't been able to understand this situation either. Green gets there and says that Shipp is the man and he's expecting great things from him this year. Next thing you know, he's #2, Emmitt's got the top spot and huh???
I hope that it is a ploy on Green's part. I truly don't see any way that Emmitt will last in there the way that Green really likes to use his RBs. I'd certainly grab Shipp in the late rounds for sure, not much before the 7th round though.

+1 to this!! He's old but I'd imagine he'd be a pretty nice guy to have protecting the passer. He's still pretty tough.
I'm kind of thinking that IF Green DOES light a fire under Shipp's butt, he may turn out to be a bit better than average. Which is not great but, if he kind of does ok towards the end of the year, when the other bottom tier backs are getting gassed/ mangled, he might not be bad to have stashed on your bench or even as trade bait...
