Ive been seeing D's go to early in drafts. Heres my 2 cents.
In 1998 the best defense for your money was the Oakland Raiders. In 1999 it was
the St. Louis Rams. In 2001, it was Chicago and Cleveland. All four teams were preseason picks for last
in their Conference. However, they were in the top five of the NFL all season long. Defenses are very
inconsistent. This is why I don't draft defense early. Also, there is a huge amount of depth here. You
don't know if they will perform well year after year. Look how many people picked San Francisco high in
1999 or St. Louis in 2000. Ugh!!! Don?t waste your high picks here. You will find a great defense late
in the draft. Also, you can probably pick up a free agent that will be in the top 10. Defensive players
fit into the same category. Don't draft high!
I think it has & always will be a personal preference on how early D's should go,but I do see it also Sling. It is a trend that started in the first couple of weeks of last season when TB's D was scoring on a regular basis.FF ballers who owned TB's D were scraping wins together from the strength of their defense, not to mention those who lost FF games when the Bucs picked one & ran it back the whole way!The trend was further solidified with that awesome defensive showing in the bowl, fresh in our minds,we are inclined to think that D's could be this year's big divider between FF Champs & wannabes. With the shuffling around of free agents & coaches it is hard to say whose D will have the great season this year but if I have already gotten my starting QB,RB,& WR then I am willing to spend a 5th round pick on a Defense...possibly a TE!
i think D's are going early, but the Bucs D won games for players in my leauges this year. However, I personnally feel that like sling said, there are always defenses that come from nowhere and are good free agency pickups. I think it is better to get good qb, rb and wr than a good D
LOL Here we go again! No one listens to The Weasel ...
... just old and in the way, I suppose. Sniff. I'll just ... sigh ... take my two 2002 league championships and my tired old butt to the bank all by myself, I guess.
(And ... I promise NOT to mention that in 14 years of fantasy football I've yet to pay one red cent drafting "D"s early - I wouldn't do that! No!).
Taking a "D" early?!
Suicide!!!
Defenses don't get hurt, players on Ds do & could greatly influence a D's output but a good defense will always be there for you, minus 1week for a bye.The scoring system of your league also weighs heavily on when you should select a defense.
A lot of talking coming from the Weasel, would you like a cookie,it appears you have the pat on the back covered yourself. From one cagey vet to another, you may be good, but you haven't beat me...I question your competition.
If and only if defences scored the way the BUCS did and they did it on a regular basis. Thats the only way its worth taking one early. Only the Bucs D was worth taking early in my league last year. You also have to take into account the scoring system of your league when deciding this question.
The bucs D outscored almost every WR in my league last year, so in that regard, they made for a good early pick. There just arent enough Bucs D's to make this a solid early pick position.
