Cowboys sources indicate Smith done in Dallas ESPN.com news services
The Dallas Cowboys are expected to make an announcement on Thursday about the status of Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher and a former Super Bowl MVP.
Club sources anticipate the Cowboys will release Smith, a three-time Super Bowl winner and the most accomplished player in franchise history.
What a dang shame.
Emmitt's only got another 2 years in him, and it's not
exactly like the Cowboys have anything better.
"Building for the future" don't fly.
Shame on Jerry Jones.
I can't help thinking that the league should change the cap rules to make it easier for teams to keep players who have been with the team for so many years. Parity wouldn't suffer very much, and fans wouldn't have to watch their favorite players wind down their careers with a rival.
i just hope he doesnt go to another team.. he should go out as a cowboy. i hate seeing guys go to another team for two years and share time w/ other backs
Emmitt is a class act, and it is a shame he cannot (probably) be a lifelong Cowboy! I have all the admiration in the world for him, and hope the best for him.
It happened to Rice, Montana, and Lott....just to name a few and it will now happen to Smith, this is what reminds us that this game is a biz, and biz like decisions have to be made...teams can't afford to play favs and the fans are one who suffer th most when they have to watch their fav players play for another team...and its usually the one you will hate the most that they will end up on.
T.S. - "You don't have to love me, but you will RESPECT me"
It would be nice to see Emmitt retire and go out as a Cowboy, but he still thinks he can play at the level necessary, so I say the more power to him. Yeah it's going to be a little weird seeing him in a Redskin uniform (j/k) but we'll all get somewhat used to it. In the end when Canton comes calling he'll be a Cowboy again.
I'm old enough to remember Joe Namath "playing" for the Rams, and Johnny Unitas(!) "playing" for the Chargers!!!
Emmitt will always be a Cowboy - like Joe Willie will alway be a Jet and Johnny U a Colt.
But Jerry Jones OWES Emmitt more than this.
If the owner of the most profitable NFL team can't keep Emmitt Smith, cap or not, no wonder players are only out for themselves, with no "team loyalty".

This is the key, I think the players started this cycle and guys like Emmitt are now paying the price.
Emmitt is one of my sporting heroes, but all he is now is a very expensive average RB

I hope Emmett retires rather than be released. Yes, he is still
better than some of the starters out there, but why not go out as a cowboy and leave the record so it's not completely out of reach.
