FANTASYOLOGY NEWS IN BRIEF
O
Chargers To Go Without WRs This Season
San Diego, CA – San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer has announced that he plans to break training camp with absolutely no wide receivers on the 45 player active roster. “Frankly, I can’t even name a single receiver that we currently have in camp,” admitted Schottenheimer after yesterday’s afternoon practice. Stunned reporters then reminded him of some of the receivers’ names, such as Tim Dwight, Reche Caldwell, Eric Parker, and Kevin Dyson, and asked the coach what his opinion of each of them was. Said Schottenheimer, “Tom (sic) Dwight is about as tall as an eighth grader. Reche Caldwell and Eric Parker………never heard of them. Are they in camp? And I believe you are trying to trick me with Kevin Dyson, because he’s a cornerback for the Tennessee Titans. I’m only concerned with the San Diego Chargers football team.” (editor’s note: Kevin Dyson indeed is in Chargers’ training camp. His brother, Andre, plays for Tennessee). Schottenheimer went on to say that the Chargers plan to utilize “a lot” of 4 and 5 tight end sets this season.

I was working on my sheets early tonite and thought who is going to play receiver for SD this year...thanks for clearing this up!!
I really think Gates is going to have an excellent year. I saw someone project the number of targets Gates would have gotten in a full season based on his last 8 games. It was very eye-opening He would have been the 2nd most targetted TE in the league:
Heap - 125
Gates - 118 (extrapolated to a full season based on last half)
Gonzalez - 101
Look for this trend to continue in '04 and do not be surprised if Gates finishes as a top 5 TE. Assuming he gets about the same amount of targets and converts about 1/2 of them he could end up with something like the following:
60 catches, 720 yards, 7 TE's
While I am avoiding all SD WR's, if I was forced to draft one it would be Kassim Osgood on upside alone. He was able to train with Randy Moss in the offseason and seems to have the desire to become a top talent in the league. However, he is very raw but could come on late in the season.
I think SD has a bunch of sleeper candidates that won't pan out:Reche Caldwell, Kassim Osgood, and Eric Parker. The guy who isn't really a sleeper, Kevin Dyson, will put up mediocre numbers as portisfan said but will probably end up their best.
