I have a question that has been bothering me for a while now. What is the rationale for having a Fantasy Football Draft before the 3rd preseason game? The 3rd game is the one that the starting offense typically plays the most in. I see guys on the cafe who are talking about their teams already and some of whome have Buckhalter, Boston, etc. on them. Why in the world wouldn't you wait to see who gets injured, who is playing well, and so on? Our league's draft is on September 6th. We will have a plethora of knowledge about all the players and can make intellegent choices. Why why why why would you hold a draft so early? Is it so your team can gell, so that your QB gets used to working with your WR's?!?!?!?! Please help me understand!

Well we drafted right before the first preseason. It makes the waiver wire more active prior to the regular season and gets people trading prior to the regular season. This momentum gets built up into regular season and makes things a little more active-
I have a ton of leagues in my spare yahoo IDs where I draft all through the preseason games as mock drafts.
This bothers me. There is a great site called Antsports where you can do mock drafts. If you are using Yahoo and continuing to play on Yahoo, fine. If you are JUST mocking on Yahoo... stay of the god damn site and find a site that is specifically for mocks.

Umm...everyone does this! Ever notice how in a public league only about 1-2 owners stay active. Thats because people use these as mock drafts! Also, there are cafe groups getting together to do mock drafts on yahoo so that no one feels about about people leaving the league, everyone knows that that is a mock.
Simply not true. I have played on Yahoo for 3 years. I have had 1-2 people not play, not 1-2 owners play. And no, not everyone does this. I don't. I use sites that are meant for mock drafts not a league site. You want to get 10 guys together to do a mock on ONE specific Yahoo league... fine, it doesn't affect anyone else trying to play. Too randomly join Yahoo leagues for mocking purposes is garbage.

Bungle here is one of the aforementioned victims of early drafting... He's had one terrible run of luck with the team he drafted in the DKL (Ricky, Buckhalter, and Boldin)... We drafted in May, mainly because of the fact that we had to do a slow message board draft, and because it was the height of the off-season, and I wanted to get going on some fantasy football stuff...
I always wait until the weekend before to draft in my local money league, but in fun leagues, I think drafting early can add an extra challenge... You have to do a little bit of speculating, and there can be big payoffs for guys that gamble correctly (Suggs, Griffin, T. Jones, C. Brown, etc.)...
We went to a whole 'nother level of early drafting in the KKL, when we began our 2004 draft in November of 2003... This made things very interesting because Barlow had not broken out, yet... Neither had Onterrio, really... Stephen Davis was still the man, and Foster hadn't seen very many touches.... etc... etc... It made things very interesting during the offseason, and made for some late round steals as people began to break out... I think one guy got Barlow in the 6th or so... I know Brady was VERY late coming off the board....
The point is, if there is no money riding on it, and if you have multiple leagues, so that your whole season is not shot if one team craps out, what's the harm in doing an early draft... It just means you have to be a little bit more educated when making your educated guesses about who ends up where and who ends up starting, etc... It's not for the meek, but it can be very rewarding if you guess properly...

So basically you are telling me you have played on yahoo PUBLIC leagues for 3 years and never had more then 2 people quit? Sorry, I find that quite hard, if not impossible to believe.

I couldn't agree more... I would be seriously pissed off if I was in a league full of bastards looking to draft and dip...
It's people like this guy that make Yahoo Public leagues not as fun as they could be...
Why would you do that when there are many other good mock draft sites?
You aren't even getting good practice, because a good portion of the time, Yahoo public leagues are full of rookies and first timers who don't know what they are doing... What's the point?
