Linking to off-site avatars and pictures could be considered band-width stealing, so better download them and upload them here or put them on some webspace of your own.

Gif is definitely smaller if you don't use a photograph like TLY's as a starting point. If you use Photographs you're better off with Jpeg's, but they're harder to customize...
