War May Postpone NCAA Games

Postby ScreamingWeasel » Tue Mar 18, 2003 8:40 am

If war begins this week, NCAA might postpone games
Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA will carefully explore all of its options in deciding whether to postpone the men's and women's basketball tournaments if the United States goes to war with Iraq this week.

"We have to arrive at a position that makes the most sense for the NCAA, but we don't want a tyrant to run our lives," NCAA president Myles Brand said Monday night.

The NCAA men's tournament would be the first big sports event affected by any conflict in Iraq. The first game, between North Carolina-Asheville and Texas Southern, is scheduled for Tuesday night in Dayton, Ohio.

The rest of the first round begins Thursday, which would be after the 48-hour deadline President Bush set Monday night for Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq or face war.

This has been discussed for awhile now...Recently they said that Viacom (CBS Parent Co) would move the games to another Viacom channel (MTV...etc...) in case of a war...The only downside to this is that not many ppl have cable, so they would lose a lot of their viewing population....

I don't think that the owners of CBS or anyone else for that matter is concerned about the money and ratings....This war is going to be ugly and I give applause to the committee to post-pone these game.....There is no sense in risking the lives of thousands.....The threat of terrorist attacks is likely and such a venue as the Tourney would be a vulnerable mark for such an act......There are about 15,000 people crammed into one building to watch a game and that would make them an easy target......I agree that they should be post-poned until the threat has died down.....STAY TUNED

Agreed Sioux. I think they should postpone too. Sad but true.
