Vikings: Elling out, Conway in

News
The Vikings released kicker Aaron Elling late Tuesday and signed Brett Conway to a two-year deal. "He's got a background of kicking in this league," head coach Mike Tice told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "That's what we like, so that's the direction we're going to go. He's obviously a talent. Green Bay thought enough of him to make him a third-round draft pick. He's bounced around a little bit, but for kickers that's not a bad thing." Elling missed two field goals and an extra point attempt during the Vikings' preseason game and continued to miss kicks during practice this week. "I had to make a move," Tice said. "I love Aaron. He just didn't do his job. That's the bottom line in this business. He understands that."

Conway has a strong leg, but is not the most accurate kicker around. That being said, Elling is a train wreck right now so anything is better. Given the Vikings' high-scoring offense, Conway could be a nicesleeper kicker.

Considering the offense that Conway is in, should I consider dropping Sebastian Janikowski for him? I love Seabass' ability, but Oakland's offense still worries me.

Conway did bounce around a lot, but was a real talent out of college. I'm actually surprised that he's still out of a job -- although, like they said, his accuracy is a little off at times.

Good for MIN - they realized they had a bad K and made a change before he hurt them. Conway is no ace, but he's better than Elling by a mile. Conway should be a fine last rd K option.

Yeah, because he kicks in a dome and plays on a team that can and should score tons of points...but when you can't kick the ball when the opportunity presents itself, it makes it hard.

Conway isn't bad, and I suppose he can step into Elling's sleeper role right now.

Whoever kicks for Min should get lots of points. Assuming as they hit a decent % of their attempts. High powered offense = lots of opportunities.

He'll get his points if he keeps his job, he's not terribly accurate (only 82% career inside the 40) but MIN does play in a dome and they do score a lot.
