McCaffrey had surgery to correct sports hernia

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey is recovering from groin surgery performed last month to correct a sports hernia, the team announced Tuesday.

McCaffrey

McCaffrey underwent surgery for a condition called athletic pubalgia, commonly called a sports hernia, on March 18 in Philadelphia.

"He will be resting for three to four weeks, and then the rehabilitative phase will begin,'' said Broncos trainer Steve Antonopulos.

McCaffrey, 34, is expected to return to full workouts after a two- to three-month recovery process.

He was slated to make $3.5 million in 2003, but he agreed to restructure his contract to make room on the team's salary cap.

McCaffrey has been one of the most productive and popular players in Broncos history.

He suffered a gruesome broken leg in the first game of the 2001 season, but bounced back last year to finish second on the team with 69 catches for 903 yards. He also set a team record by catching a pass in 68 straight games.

He is third in team history with 46 receiving touchdowns, fourth in receptions with 443 and fifth with 6,005 yards.

Ed is a tough cookie. If he can come back from a leg that broke in half, he can come back from this.

My left one hurts just thinking about this procedure :-o :~(

Ed is a tough SOB but I think the injuries may start to catch up with him. Looks like he could lose his starting job if this lingers but he would be one hell for a WR in the slot.

He doesnt sound like he is worth a draft pick this year

Yup....this little setback for Eddie Mac could be just the thing for Lelie to wiggle into the #2 spot opposite R. Smith. I think he may even outperform Smith if he develops a chemistry with Plummer.

Shannon Sharpe said to watch out for this guy. He's gonna be special.
