Denver’s star running back Clinton Portis was a no-show at the team’s voluntary workouts over the past two weeks, choosing instead to work out in South Florida with Indianapolis’ Edgerrin James. The Rocky Mountain News quoted Deion Sanders who has attended the workouts. “You can't have a better running mate than Edge. They're going at it." But Denver’s conditioning coach, Rich Tuten, wasn’t happy with the decision, saying, “I want everybody here. It builds great team unity. They know they're all doing their part and are going through the same type workouts and are feeling the same. I know the older guys can do it. I haven't seen the results with a young guy doing it. But even if (Portis) comes in here ranked No. 1, in better shape than anybody, I'd still want him here.”
Uh oh. Of all the people for Portis to take offseason training advice from, Edgerrin James is probably the worst. Already, the Broncos aren’t happy with Portis’ decision, just like the Colts aren’t happy with James’ frequent decisions to eschew the Colts’ workouts. Plus, Edge is just plain flaky. We don’t like the notion that he’s filling Portis’ head with weirdness. Portis remains a serious fantasy stud, nonetheless.
Sure wouldnt stop me drafting portis, but im glad im not alone in thinking Edge is a bit of a fruit loop.

hey at least portis is doing something but i think his ego is growing too fast for a young guy. he needs to be at camp with his team or they will take him as a joke
Edgerrin had a great quote in an ESPN the Magazine article before last season. It was on the subject of him taking crap for missing the voluntary minicamp. I couldn't find the article, but he said something to the effect of:
"If your boss made tomorrow voluntary, you might not damn well come to work either."
i dont think they would take him as a joke, but i do think they will lose some respect for him (that he is still building) if he doesnt practice with the team...he should be with his own guys....on the other hand he over there with a stud RB working out....not to shabby
