From PFW:The Dolphins are reportedly close to adding former Saints SS Sammy Knight. His signing was expected to be announced today at a 2:30 p.m. EDT press conference. “We want him here,” Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt told The Miami Herald. “There’s not a harder-hitting safety in the NFL. He does things you can’t coach.” Knight will compete with Arturo Freeman to start at strong safety.
PFW: Assess this move.
It’s an outstanding one for the Dolphins, who likely didn’t pay that much to lure Knight to Miami. Knight may not be all that fast, but he makes plays, and he will be an excellent asset for the Dolphins, who face three top quarterbacks (Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady, Chad Pennington) twice a season. The loser of the Freeman-Knight battle (the hunch here is that it will be Freeman) will provide nice depth.
I am impressed with the Dolphins’ approach to this offseason. They’ve added some key veterans (Junior Seau, Jeff Zgonina, Terrell Buckley, Knight) to their defense, their strength. This is a defense you can win a Super Bowl with.
Now, the key is to get enough offense — and to avoid December pratfalls — to get into the playoffs.
