I'm gonna post this bit of info here since it is an AFC North exclusive...hehehe
Davis mum on QB competition
06/01/03
So who's winning the Browns' quarterback
competition?
Fat chance on finding a clue. Butch Davis isn't
giving that up.
Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb have "competed"
through nine quarterback school practices. The
rest of the team is there too, of course, but
this was supposed to be the beginning of Davis'
search for his No. 1 quarterback.
"It's going good," Davis said. "It's not
something you go out and discuss and talk about
[each day]. Guys take reps and opportunities, and
go out and execute and perform."
Davis has kept everyone on the team guessing by
mixing first-teamers with second- and
third-teamers.
"You look up in the huddle and you'll see three
rookies in with six veterans," he said. "You're
just as apt to see a starting offensive tackle in
with the third team because he's working on
certain fundamentals and mechanics. So it's not
much of a distraction."
It's hard to imagine either quarterback looking
bad in the absence of tackling and full game
speed.
"Both of those guys are making strides," Davis
said. "They both are better quarterbacks today
than three months ago . . . just because of the
knowledge and experience Kelly gained in some
game opportunities and the knowledge and
experience Tim got from having been a legitimate
starter in the last two seasons in an offense
that hasn't changed.
"As the supporting cast has grown, certainly both
of their performances have gotten better."
Davis said Couch's attitude "has been great . . .
he's in good spirits, is out there doing a good
job."
The team has five more quarterback school
practices, and then five practices in the veteran
minicamp June 10-12.
Davis would not speculate on when he might
announce his starting quarterback.
"As I said before, it can be at any particular
time," he said. "Once we feel this is the
direction and it's the right time and we feel
we're making the right decision, that's when
we'll do it."
