Even after making a stronger commitment to William Green and drafting Lee Suggs, Jamel White is gonna stay on w/ the Brownies. Here's the Story:
Running back Jamel White has signed a four-year contract which keeps him under contract through the 2006 season, the Cleveland Browns announced today.
“I am happy to be in Cleveland and happy to say I’m going to continue to be a Cleveland Brown,” White said. “I hope I can continue to perform well and play my entire career here. I have a house in the area and plan to start my own business, so I’m glad that everything worked out. There were some trying and frustrating times over the last couple of months when we were working on a deal, but that is behind us now. It was just business, and I did not want anything that was said or written to give myself or the Browns organization a bad name. I just want to be a football player and go out and compete and help the Browns win a Super Bowl.”
“This deal rewards Jamel for his accomplishments on and off the field,” Head Coach Butch Davis said. “Jamel’s versatility has been a key asset for our offense the last two years. It was our intention all along to work something out with Jamel, because we want to retain the players who are productive and contribute to our success. We tendered the one-year contract to Jamel to give us time to negotiate a long-term deal, and everything worked out exactly as we had hoped.”
White was acquired via waivers from the Indianapolis Colts on August 29, 2000. He has seen action in 43 career games with 13 starts. He appeared in 14 games with six starts in 2002 and posted a career-high 470 rushing yards on 106 carries (4.4 avg.) with three rushing TDs. He added a career-high 63 receptions for 452 receiving yards (7.2 avg.). His 63 receptions ranked 2nd on the club and tied for the second-most in club history by a running back (Greg Pruitt, 65 in 1981). He had a season-high 105 yards rushing and 1 TD at Pittsburgh on September 29 for his second career 100-yard rushing performance. White was also named an offensive team captain along with Tim Couch and Ryan Tucker.
