Sep 23 After running back Quentin Griffin was stuffed on two third-and-short situations in last week's game against the Jaguars, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan told the Denver Post that he will explore other options if Griffin continues to struggle in those opportunities. "We went against a defensive front that is exceptionally good, very powerful with their two tackles," he said. "If we keep missing those third-and-1s, maybe we'll go in that direction. We've got some bigger guys that could run in that situation."
Views: Shanahan is not going away from Griffin just yet, especially because the Jags are particularly stout against the run. However, if Q doesn't get the job done in the next couple weeks, you can expect him to give fullback Reuben Droughns and/or rookie Tatum Bell a look in such situations, most significantly at the goal line. Griffin's owners can begin worrying.
Sep 23 Head coach Mike Shanahan said that Griffin will continue to be the Broncos' short-yardage back, The Sports Xchange reports.
Recommendation: Griffin was stuffed twice on third-and-one against the Jaguars in Week 2, and at 5-feet-7, 195 pounds he isn't a prototypical short-yardage back. However, the Broncos are going to stick with him for the time being. The Jaguars are stout against the run, but if you own Griffin, you'll want to watch how this situation develops should the second-year pro continue to struggle with the short-yardage plays.
