Although he isn't trying to start a quarterback controversy, Charlie Batch badly wants to play in 2003 after riding pine a year ago. Tommy Maddox is the starter, but as Batch told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, "I do plan on playing." He enters training camp as the No. 2 quarterback, but Batch is looking forward to the competition. "Right now, he's the guy," Batch said. "I have to actually try to get him out of there."
Batch started for years in Detroit, so he wants to regain that status in Pittsburgh. However, unless Maddox gets hurt or plays poorly, Batch probably will once again watch from the bench. That said, the Steelers are in pretty good shape with a pair of qualified starting quarterbacks.

They both got splintery butts And I cannot lie, all ya backups can’t deny That when a qb gets the call And he gets up to throw the ball He gets stuck What shitty luck Cuz you know them splinters are sticky Deep in the rear, it gets icky “I'm stuck and ya’ll can't stop staring” Is what he’ll be saying All the benchwarmers try to warn me But not playin any games got Him so swarmy “Ooh, screw it all”, he’s wheezin And then starts tweezin You say you wanna play football? Well get used to riding the pine and all
You’ll watch them playin’ The hell with what the coach is sayin’ They sweat, you sit feelin’ like a big nitwit
“I'm tired of second string” They saying startin’s the only thing Take the average back up and ask him that He’ll say “I can be the quaterback” , so
Fellas (yeah), fellas (yeah) Has your QB got you jealous? (hell yeah) Well stand up, tweeze out, even Tight Ends Have to shout “The Splinters are Back”
