When the Packers signed veteran halfback Lamar Smith earlier this month it was speculated he would take over the job as Ahman Green's backup. Not so fast. Monday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Najeh Davenport and Tony Fisher will enter training camp second and third on the depth chart, and indicated Smith might be around simply to provide some competition and depth.
As it turns out, Smith may not even make the team. The Packers will likely only carry four halfbacks if they become worried about a recurrence of the injury problems Green had last season. We'll be monitoring the competition in training camp so that you know whom to draft along with Green as insurance.
